Technology in Longevity: Challenges and Opportunities for the Elderly: a discussion about the impact of digital tools on the lives of older adults
Technology as an Ally for Quality of Life
Although we often associate technology with isolation, it also has great potential to improve the lives of older adults. During our live session, we discussed with expert Valéria Lins, gerontologist and founder of the Nandaré Integrated Longevity Center, how technology can be used to stimulate cognition, maintain family connections, and even improve mobility. The use of smartphones and video call apps, such as WhatsApp, can be an efficient way to keep older adults connected to their families, especially in times of social isolation.
-
Cognitive stimulation: games and apps can help keep the mind active and improve memory.
-
Family connections: messaging apps and social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, are great tools for strengthening family bonds, especially for those living far apart.
-
Digital autonomy: teaching older adults to use apps like Uber, online shopping, and digital banking can increase their independence and self-esteem.

Screen Use and its Impact on Longevity
However, like any tool, technology needs to be used in balance. During the conversation, we addressed how excessive screen time, especially watching TV or consuming content passively, can harm mental and physical health. Sedentary lifestyle, for example, is one of the main factors affecting longevity, and many older adults end up getting lost in a loop of content consumption, without actively choosing what to watch. This can affect sleep, mental health, and even cognitive function, resulting in less healthy aging.
It’s crucial to teach older adults to use technology purposefully, choosing digital activities that truly contribute to their well-being, such as cognitive stimulation games or online classes.
How Technology Can Help Prevent Social Isolation
Technology has also proven to be an important ally in preventing social isolation, which is one of the biggest challenges for the elderly. The ability to connect with friends and family through video calls or interactions in WhatsApp groups can provide a sense of belonging and reduce loneliness. Additionally, platforms like Pinterest and YouTube have been popular among older adults, not only for entertainment but also as sources of learning and social interaction.
-
Online groups: participating in interest groups on Facebook or other social networks can help older adults make new friends and expand their social network.
-
Quality content: following channels that offer educational content, such as health or hobby videos, can add knowledge and encourage mental activity.

Tips for Using Technology Purposefully
With technology so present in our daily lives, it’s important to know how to use it to maximize its benefits and minimize negative impacts. Here are some tips for using technology in a balanced and healthy way:
-
Limit screen time: try to limit the use of technology for leisure to a maximum of 1 to 1.5 hours per day.
-
Choose relevant content: prefer educational content or content that stimulates cognition, such as word games or sudoku.
-
Connect with family: use WhatsApp or video calls to maintain regular contact with children and grandchildren.
Technology, when used purposefully, can be a powerful ally in longevity. However, like any tool, it’s essential that it be used in balance, always focusing on improving quality of life, rather than simply passing the time.
