The work environment has a direct impact on our physical and mental health. In our latest live session, broadcast on our social media, we discussed how ergonomics in the digital environment can prevent postural problems, eye strain, and chronic pain, all in an increasingly home office-oriented work scenario. To help us better understand these issues, we had the participation of Ana Carolina Albieri, director of the Aurea Arquitetura group, an expert in ergonomics and well-being in the workplace.

Why is Digital Ergonomics so Important in the Home Office?

With the increase in remote work, many people have started to face the discomfort of working in inadequate chairs, improvised desks, and poor lighting. But in reality, our body wasn’t made to spend long hours sitting, especially in incorrect positions. According to Ana, adapting the work environment to the human body, and not the other way around, is essential to prevent back pain, eye strain, and even migraines. As an example, she mentions that 72% of workers in home offices report back or neck pain, a problem that can be avoided with simple adjustments to the workspace.

Digital Ergonomics: How to Prevent Pain and Postural Problems at Work was the topic of EquilibriON’s live session, which hosted Ana Carolina Albieri for the chat

Tips to Improve Ergonomics in the Home Office:

  • Chair adjustment: choose a chair that supports your lower back and maintains correct posture.
  • Desk and monitor position: the desk should be at an appropriate height and the monitor should be aligned at eye level to avoid strain on the cervical spine.
  • Regular breaks: stand up every 60 minutes to relieve muscle tension and reduce eye strain.
  • Diffused lighting: avoid direct light on the screen and seek soft, uniform lighting in the environment.

The Impact of Ergonomics on Performance and Health

Beyond comfort, ergonomics has a direct impact on productivity. A poorly adjusted environment can result in chronic pain, which decreases work performance. As Ana emphasized, companies need to consider the physical well-being of their employees as part of their responsibility. Providing adequate furniture and promoting awareness about correct posture are simple steps that can transform employees’ daily lives and improve their quality of life.
